According to a press release by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in New Delhi, Indian students now make up the largest international student community in Germany for the second consecutive year. The latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany reveal a 15.1% increase in Indian student enrollments over the past year, reaching 49,483 in the Winter Semester of 2023-2024.

  1. Engineering remains the top choice for Indian students, with 60% of the cohort pursuing engineering courses. Other popular fields include law, management, and social studies (21%) as well as mathematics and natural sciences (13%). These disciplines reflect Germany’s global reputation for excellence in technical and scientific education.

New Work Regulations for International Students

Germany’s appeal has been further enhanced by recent policy changes. As of March 1, 2024, international students from outside the European Union can now work up to 20 hours per week, double the previous limit of 10 hours. This change also benefits those who are in Germany for educational exploration or language training but have not yet enrolled in a university.
