German Universities Witness Significant Increase in International Student Enrollment

 

A recent survey conducted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) reveals a remarkable seven percent increase in the number of international students enrolled at German universities during the winter semester. This surge, mirroring the trend observed in 2023, is primarily driven by a significant influx of degree-seeking international students, particularly at the Master’s level. A substantial majority (56%) of the surveyed universities reported a noticeable rise in Master’s student enrollment, while only 16% witnessed a decline.

The DAAD survey also shed light on the primary obstacles faced by international students seeking admission to German universities. Among the most prominent challenges cited by universities are:

Stringent Entry Policies and Visa Procedures: 83% of universities identified these as a major hurdle, highlighting the complexities involved in obtaining necessary visas and meeting entry requirements.
Housing Affordability: The availability of affordable housing emerged as a significant concern for 75% of the surveyed institutions. 
High Cost of Living and Studying: 69% of universities acknowledged the financial burden faced by international students due to the overall cost of living and studying in Germany.

Methodology

The DAAD conducted the survey between early and mid-December, reaching out to approximately 390 state-recognized German universities. Over 200 institutions responded to the survey, representing around 70% of all international students enrolled in Germany. The findings from this survey were then extrapolated to provide an overall picture of the international student landscape across all German universities.
